The Kehlsteinhaus - Eagle's Nest
The Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the "Eagle's Nest," is a historic and architecturally impressive mountain hut in the Bavarian Alps. It is located on the summit of the Kehlstein, approximately 1,834 meters above sea level, near Berchtesgaden. The house offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making it a popular tourist destination.
Story
The Kehlsteinhaus was built in 1938 as a representative building for the Nazi regime and presented to Adolf Hitler on his 50th birthday. It served primarily as a reception venue for foreign state guests and was not intended for permanent residence. The building is a stunning example of the architecture of the period, captivating both by its location and its elaborate construction, which was carried out under extreme conditions.
Visit and sights
Today, the Kehlsteinhaus is a popular tourist destination and serves as a mountain restaurant. Visitors can take buses from a parking lot near the house and complete the final part of the journey via a gold-decorated elevator. The interior of the house still contains some original features, such as the famous Italian marble fireplace, a gift from Mussolini.
